Junior Web Developer | Senior Web Developer

Junior Web Developer

We are looking for someone to join our team as a full-time web developer and work on our proprietary code base. While the code is mature and flexible like Suzanne Sommers, it requires tweaks and customizations like Joan Rivers. Your main task will be to see these customization projects from start to finish by making use of a wide range of skills from XHTML, CSS, JS, & PHP. Sometimes our clients can be a little crazy with their expectations and timeframes, so good communication and time management skills will be required to rein them in. If working on technical projects with a non-technical user base isn't your thing, you can probably stop reading now.

The natural ebb and flow of client projects will be up and down throughout the year. During the downtime, you will work with our senior engineers to develop, document and enhance our core application. That part is a lot of fun, and you will most certainly learn something new.

About You

  • You are an accomplished XHTML & CSS coder (by hand please, WYSIWYGs are for babies)
  • You are well-versed in JavaScript/JQuery (AJAX experience a must)
  • You understand cross-browser technologies and how to code for these issues, including handling previous browser versions. A significant part of our user base is old school and think updates are some sort of voodoo.
  • You are extremely comfortable working in Photoshop and Illustrator
  • You can code in PHP and have a working knowledge of SQL
  • You've had experience with version control (SVN, CVS, GIT, etc)
  • You pepper your speech with acronyms like SVN, CVS, GIT, etc.
  • You have patience. You're fine explaining things a few times until someone gets it without letting it get to you.

The Position

  • Take design mocks and convert them into live websites
  • Work with CM support staff to make edits to existing customer websites
  • Schedule conference calls with clients to discuss and define custom projects
  • Use in-house software applications to track projects and communicate status
  • Add PHP-based customizations to the existing code base
  • Document existing code base using the in-house Wiki
  • Assist development team in new feature roll-outs and core updates to the system
  • Pick all of the yellow M&M's out of the bowl because the CEO doesn't like the way they taste

Bonus Round

  • Experience working in UNIX operating systems
  • Experience working in MediaWiki or equivalent wiki software
  • Experience in the Promotional Marketing / Ad Specialties industry

Senior Web Developer

About You

  • You are an expert LAMP developer and have over six years of experience coding customer-facing web applications
  • You have expert OOP skills including working knowledge of common design patterns
  • You have the skill set to roll your own MVC framework
  • You are fluent in front-end technologies (CSS, XHTML/HTML) and JS frameworks
  • You are most productive working in a fast-pasted, iterative UNIX environment
  • You are not afraid to embrace new technologies and prefer to use whatever tool is the right one for the job
  • You have superior problem solving and organizational skills and pay attention to detail
  • You liked Betty White long before her recent meteoric rise in popularity

The Position

  • Develop new features and technology by writing extensible, modular classes in PHP and creating well-formed database schemas in MySQL
  • Integrate 3rd party tools and APIs to enhance core platform and provide new services and functionality for production e-commerce B2B websites
  • Maintain and refactor existing application for performance and scalability in a high-traffic environment
  • Write tools and scripts for department heads on an as needed basis
  • Debug and test code using a wide variety of open source and custom tools
  • Document new and existing code using PHPDocs and MediaWiki
  • Commit and push code on a daily basis in a Subversion source control environment
  • Use in-house proprietary tools to track, log and communicate project status to team
  • Use Exchange email and shared calendar/appointment system to manage and respond to interoffice requests
  • Be accountable for several projects in different stages of the development cycle with little supervision
  • Must be able to handle challenges in an upbeat and positive manner when changing requirements and quirky personalities are part of your every day

Bonus Round

  • Experience with Imagick, MemCached or Sphinx
  • Experience with internationalization and character encoding
  • Experience in the Promotional Marketing / Ad Specialties industry
